Building A Rock Garden

As you look over your yard, you may see the need for something different and interesting. You have looked at other lawns and a rock garden might intrigued you.

Having made this choice, the first thing you will need to decide is where you want to place new garden, the size and shape. One thing to keep in mind as to placement of your rock garden is how you mow the lawn. You will not want the garden to become a hindrance as you are mowing the lawn. Also, you need to decide if you want a sun rock garden, a shade rock garden, or maybe even a water rock garden feature. If you choose a shade garden you will need to keep the garden to the north and near trees for shade.

After you have made the choice of type and placement of your garden, you need to decide what type of rock you wish to use. Sandstone, limestone or tofa rock (a rock that can be drilled out for planting), are recommended for rock gardens. Your rock garden can be a natural raised garden with rocks or a flat rock garden, where your ground is flat and you bring in rocks to make the garden. Color is also a great part of what makes a rock garden interesting. Color can be in the rock you use as well as the plant colors.

There are several types of gardens; the berm (a raised yet not formal type), woodland raised (long and in the shade), rock accent and stucco raised. Any of these will add great value and interest as well as beauty to your yard, as well as a source of beauty and enjoyment for you and your family.
