How to Make a Rock Garden

Making a rock garden depends on a few things. First of all, you can use rocks that sit in an area naturally and plan your rock garden around them, or you can buy or import rocks from other areas to the exact place you want your rock garden. The rocks should be the appropriate size for the area of your garden and also compliment the color scheme you have planned as much as possible.

Next, you will need to figure out the exact borders of your rock garden. If you are making a rock garden in a flat, rockless area, dig up the sod or cover the area with newspaper and cover it with a layer of soil. Place the rocks around the perimeter of the area. The size of the rock should be appropriate for the size of the garden. Then you will need to strategically place a few more rocks inside the perimeter and fill the rest of the area with soil that drains well. If you are making your rock garden from a natural outcropping of rock, you can fill in the areas you will be planting flowers with plenty of soil and go to the next step.

You will need to keep in mind color schemes, as well as the amount of light, soil drainage, and amount of water the plants and flowers require. The colors of the flowers should compliment each other. It is best to stick with just a few colors for best results. Plant the flowers you want as the focal point right in the middle and then plant the rest of the flowers radiating out from the focal point. With a little planning, you can create a very beautiful rock garden that will be pleasing for years to come.
