Building a Mulch Garden

Mulch is a great way to beautify your garden. Adding mulch to a flower garden is very easy. All you need to do is pick the plants you want and where you want them. Also keep in mind as to if you want a brick border to keep the line of mulch defined. If so, then you need to do that before you spread the mulch. Make sure you spread the mulch around about an inch or two thick. Mulch is also great for helping to raise garden beds that are in low spots.

When using mulch to build a raised garden bed, it can be a little bit tougher, but still easy enough that you do not need to pay to have it done. Start out by figuring out where you want it, how tall, and how big. Then set your boundary using rocks, bricks, or even landscaping timbers. Then get a roll of black plastic and lay it out in your spot. This is to help keep weeds from growing.

Next, add a layer of rock about two inches for drainage and a layer of dirt or potting soil. Make sure it is deep enough for your plants. If you are building up about a foot, layer it with soil and mulch a couple inches thick each layer. This is the main layer for the plants, so it needs to be the thickest, usually needing to be at least eight inches. When the plants are planted where you want them, it is finally time for the top mulch. Spread the mulch all around the plants about an inch or two and sit back and enjoy the beauty of your hard work.
