How to Hang a Bird Feeder

There is no better way to enjoy birds than to hang a bird feeder in your garden. Of course you have to find the perfect spot for the bird feeder. This may take a little time because you need to take careful consideration where you place the feeder. If you are not opposed to weeding, then placing the feeder in or close to your garden will not be a problem. The seeds from the feeder will drop below the feeder and will grow as unwanted weeds. You may want to hang the feeder where it will be easy to mow the weeds down.

When hanging your bird feeder, placing it in a southwestern location is the best. Birds have a fondness for eating in the sun and out of the wind. They also prefer not to have anything in the way that prevents them from seeing predators. Water is a natural attraction for birds, so having a bird bath near the feeder will help attract birds. If your feeder is too exposed to birds of prey and cats the birds may not visit your feeder, so try to position it where there are trees for cover.

If you hang your feeder from a tree, make sure that you hang it six feet from the trunk or any limbs. Squirrels have a great fondness for the seeds in your feeder. To prevent them from climbing into the feeder, placing a squirrel baffle over the feeder may be necessary. It is almost like an umbrella to prevent the squirrels from climbing the pole or wire to get to the seed. When placing the feeder on a free standing pole in your garden, the pole should be at least 5’ high and 10’ from the nearest tree.
