Wear long sleeves to protect your arms. Make sure you have heavy or thick gloves to wear on your hands so the thorns don't get you. You'll need a pair of clippers and they will need to be clean before using them. You can use rubbing alcohol on them before and after use. You will want to prune in early spring when frost is done. When trimming as branch you will want to have the cut on a 45 degree angle that has a branch with 5 leaves on it.
After the cut you will need to put wax (from a birthday candle or nail polish) so the bugs don't make a home in the rose bush and kill it. Make sure when trimming that the center of the rose bush has good air flow going though it. When your trimming is done make sure you clean up all your cuttings and throw them away.
