Furniture and decor are a reflection of your own personal taste on the inside of your house. Likewise, gardens are a beautiful expression of your own personal taste on the outside of your house. There are many different types of gardens and many different ways to take care of them. Mulching your garden is one main way to care for your garden while making it aesthetically pleasing.
Mulch is considered anything that covers the ground on top of the top soil in your garden. Its purpose is to protect your garden plants from drying out, insect invasion, weed development and erosion. Mulch is used as an insulator to protect your plants from extremes in temperature. Depending on the type of mulch used, it can even act to nourish the top soil as it decomposes over time.
The categories of mulch are organic and inorganic. Organic mulch will be biodegradable items that enrich the soil as they decompose such as wood chips, leaves, compost, corn cobs, bark, etc. Inorganic mulch would be such items as rocks, gravel, landscape fabric, burlap and plastic. Inorganic mulch may decompose, but it will not add any nutritional components to the soil. Mulch should be spread at varying thicknesses depending on the type of mulch used. Most organic mulch should be about three inches thick, while inorganic mulch only needs to be one to two inches thick.
The nice thing about mulch is there are so many different varieties to choose from. Mulch not only serves a practical purpose, it also allows the gardener to add some aesthetic value and beauty to their garden. Different mulches provide different aesthetic features. No matter what type of mulch used, most mulches make a garden look truly complete.
